A Journey into the Hidden Wonders of the Earth

If you’re looking for things to do in Fort William with kids, or a fascinating family attraction in the Scottish Highlands, step inside Treasures of the Earth and discover a magical underground world of crystals, gemstones and fossils.

Our displays are set within atmospheric cave and mine scenes, taking visitors on an adventure through the history of our planet. It’s an exciting and educational experience for visitors of all ages — perfect for families, curious explorers and anyone interested in the natural wonders of the Earth.

Whether you’re planning a day out while visiting the Highlands or searching for something to do in Fort William on a rainy day, Treasures of the Earth is an unforgettable indoor attraction.

Amazing Crystals and Gemstones

Marvel at giant amethyst geodes, some over 7 feet tall, formed more than 200 million years ago deep within the Earth. Discover sparkling quartz crystals, colourful gemstones, rare minerals and beautiful natural formations from around the world.

Many visitors say they had no idea the Earth could create such incredible natural treasures.

Fossils and Ancient Life

Travel back hundreds of millions of years through our fossil displays. See incredible specimens including:

  • 500-million-year-old trilobites
  • petrified wood
  • ancient amber containing insects
  • sabre-tooth tiger remains
  • fossils from prehistoric seas and forests

It’s a fascinating journey through time that both children and adults find captivating.

The Magical UV Cave

One of the highlights of the museum is our Ultra-Violet Cave, where certain minerals glow and change colour under UV light.

This magical display shows crystals in a completely different way and is often a favourite part of the visit for children and adults alike.

The Troll Trail

Younger visitors can take part in our Troll Trail, a fun activity that turns the museum into a magical treasure hunt.

Hidden throughout the caves are our mischievous trolls waiting to be discovered. As families explore the displays, children are encouraged to keep a lookout and see how many trolls they can spot along the way.

The Troll Trail is a great way to keep younger explorers engaged while they discover the wonders of crystals, gemstones and fossils.
